Designed for a veterinarian and his wife, an artist, this modern farmhouse is situated on a 2-acre site in Davie, Florida — a rural community just west of Fort Lauderdale. The owners emphasized the need for privacy and accessibility as well as a desire for passive cooling. The home, L-shaped in plan, was designed as a 24’ wide single-story structure with a dog trot condition across the main façade and wrap-around porches. The main approach to the house, which is on axis with the central breezeway, offers a powerful perspectival view of the pool and expansive grounds behind. As the site is prone to floods, the home is raised several feet off the ground. It is constructed of pre-cast concrete and includes a gabled standing seam metal roof to allow for vaulted space within the interior.
