SPACE: ART AND LIGHT GALLERY
LOCATION: Greenville, SC
DATES: August 16, 2018 – September 1, 2018
Jacob Brillhart was featured as the guest artist at the Art and Light Gallery’s 10 Year Anniversary Celebration, in Greenville, SC.
Looking beyond the subject and its formal constructions and details, these selected works seek to explore the more ephemeral qualities of space that exist between subject and object: i.e. those atmospheric qualities that make us respond emotionally to space, such as light, sound, material presence, temperature, reflection, patina and memory. These paintings explore the sources and characteristics of atmospheres of buildings and landscapes throughout the South – capturing how places feel. The media used is watercolor and pencil.
These paintings and drawings also form the underpinnings of the office. Notably, our architectural designs are moving past an aesthetic that is solely about formal expression into a more dynamic architecture, wherein sense of atmosphere is derived through the use of materials and a deep connection to the landscape. This research is especially timely and critical to the continued development of our current design work, specifically as it relates to material presence and craft. More importantly, this project addresses the continued role of painting as research, offering a counterpoint to today’s digitized process of creative exploration.
