LOCATION: PUERTO RICO
SIZE: 5,000 SF
STATUS: IN DESIGN
We were among several firms selected to develop two residential concepts for a new residential community along Puerto Rico’s seacoast. Our approach for both designs draws from Puerto Rico’s history of Tropical Modernism and Henry Klumb’s early architecture there. His tropical designs merged architecture with landscape; dissolved the lines between inside and out, and created living spaces within porches, courts and gardens; as well as relied on vernacular building traditions to develop a contemporary architecture that responded to topography. Other inspiration is drawn from Richard Neutra and Lina bo Bardi and their explorations of developing an architecture for the tropics.
The goal is to be contextual, referencing Puerto Rico’s architectural history while also creating a connection between building, landscape, materials, history and site. Both projects explore how one can live on a hillside looking out; live both inside and out, and how the buildings themselves meet the sky and the landscape beyond.
